Designed to bring Antarctica closer to Melbourne, 'Breaking the Ice' invites audiences to move beyond distant myths of a frozen frontier and experience the continent through culture, memory, and human connection.

The campaign bridges RMIT Gallery’s spaces with the everyday paths of students, city workers, and visitors, sparking curiosity through immersive storytelling, interactive artefacts, and artist perspectives.

By weaving together physical installations and digital engagement, 'Breaking the Ice' transforms passive observation into shared exploration. From aurora nights and sound trails to social media filters and scavenger hunts, the campaign turns RMIT’s urban setting into a living invitation to step closer, reflect, and connect.

Throughout this website, these tools will highlight how RMIT Culture uses creativity and accessibility to make Antarctica “closer than you think,” fostering curiosity and cultural engagement among diverse urban audiences.
